• Sunfish as an image filing system

From Rob Hemmings@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jul 13 16:58:49 2025
I'm trying to use Sunfish to access a MAC from an ArmX6 running RISC OS
5.31. It works fine via the frontend but I also want to use it as an
image filing system. This only seems to work if I have already used the frontend to connect to the MAC.

If I click on the image filing system folder without having accessed it
via the frontend then RISC OS freezes with an hourglass and I have to completely switch off and then on again.

Has anyone had any success with using Sunfish as an image filing system
without having to load the frontend first?

I'd be grateful for any help!

Make sure the SunFish module is loaded in the boot sequence, than any
    image file will work.

That's what I would have thought but Sunfish is already loaded onto the
icon bar at Boot so I was assuming that would load the module? Also, if
I use Sunfish to load a different MAC folder manually then the image file
still hangs RISC OS. It only seems to work if I have opened the image
    file manually first.

Sorry, I've just realised that was not well explained!

I have Sunfish in my boot sequence and have checked - the module is
    present on loading the computer.

If I then double click on the image file on RISC OS then RISC OS just
hangs. Even an alt-break does nothing.

If I access the MAC folder via the Sunfish frontend then that works fine
and if, after that, I double click on the image file then that also loads
    OK.

    I'm a bit puzzled!

On my Pi4 to check yesterday, I created an image file, quit the app and rmkilled the module. Clicking on the image file gave an error as
expected. I then loaded just the module with no front end running, and
    the image file worked.

I've just tried on my Mini.m which has just been booted and has
!SunFish in AddToApps but not run at startup. With an image file saved directly on to it's drive over ShareFS (so SunFish front end not run),
as soon as I double click the image file is loaded and all works as
expected, still with no front end running - which is what you are
    trying to do.

    Thanks Druck,

I'll give that a try tomorrow and see what happens.

Well I've now had time to experiment a bit more and I'm now very puzzled!
I can't reproduce your results above but I can't see what I am doing differently.

I've tried putting rebooting my ArmX6.
Initially the Sunfish module is not running and if I click on the image
    file then RISC OS hangs.

If, I have !SunFish in AddToApps and load the Sunfish module and click on
the image file then RISC OS hangs.

If I have !SunFish in LookAt then the results are the same.

The only way I can avoid RISC OS hanging is if I load the !Sunfish front
end with the mount for the image file saved either via !Boot or manually.
Then if I click on the image file it opens as expected.

    All very odd!
