Hi,
Does anyone use !Powerbase (by Derek Haslam) on RISC OS 5.28?
It works perfectly until I try to make a Report, the resulting file is truncated or garbled.
Once I've used it on R5, if I transfer the database to my Virtual Acorn
4.39 it still grabled.
Has anyone seen this?

I use Powerbase for my my address book database. It no longer works
as previously. I have been in touch with Derek Haslam but he cannot
find the cause of the problem. I am using an Armx6 and Riscos 5.29. My problem is that a record seems to behave as a number of separate fields rather than a complete record. Maybe the problem is caused by some
other program on my computer?!!

Yes, I contacted him as well but no joy.
Is it something to do with32 bitting, or R5 or in my computer set-up?
Pity as it's a brilliant programme.
Exporting CSV still works OK.

Might I suggest possibly moving to !Impact from SineNomine, its a superb relational database, with lots of nice facilities. You can even import
your CSV file into to it and will if you want create a database for you.

Malcolm Smith reports using Powerbase for an address book database. I find !Masterfile perfectly adequate for that and it runs here under !Aemulor.

It's not entirely fair to describe Impact as a sledgehammer in this context, I feel. Yes, it's relational -- but only if you go looking for it. Otherwise it pretends to be a straightforward flat-file database, AIUI.

By the sound of it, Impact is the odd one out of the three by being actively maintained...

Yes it can be used a flat database. it also uses the same mail merge facilities that Powerbase uses via the Impulse module to either Ovation
Pro or Impression. Impcat also comes with ImpEmail , !LabPrint and
!DrawPrint - although all three of those extras can be brought separately
if you wanted.

Is Masterfile still available for download? I used it as my first database back in the Archimedes days.
Another Database program is !DataPower Home for the more simple version, still available not aware of any development on it for years.
I am not sure if there is a later version as !Plingstore
appears not to be working at present.

The full version of !DataPower I have is version 3.16 March 2014, it has
card file modes. I am not sure if there is a later version as !Plingstore appears not to be working at present. It is now an R-Comp product so presumably it is being maintained and support is available.

Just accessed it 15 mins ago not problem. If you get the message 'error
on server' just close !Store down and try later. It usually means the
VPS server they use is playing up again. I believe Alan Wrigley has to
give the server a good kicking to get it wake itself up.
I reported the issue to Andrew, apparently no-one else had complained. He
had the server kicked hence everything is now ok.
I also asked about DataPower updates and Andrew said that no-one had
asked for new features so no updates pending, and by the same token presumably no-one has reported any bugs.

In a bit of a twist, after what may have been about a decade, Powerbase received an update earlier this year. Check out http://www.boulsworth.co.uk/pbase/ for details.
One other thing that occurred to me is that it may be an ARMv8 issue,
so running it under Aemulor may resolve Chris's original issue?

As I'm not familiar with Powerbase, I probably cannot help, but when
you mentioned making a Report below, I wondered whether this is
something Powerbase does in conjunction with Impression or Ovation Pro
by mail-merging?

I haven't used Powerbase for a long time, but while there seem to be
some odd issues in using the latest version of the program on ARMX6
(e.g. using the 'next record' button only updates Field 1, with the data displayed in the other fields remaining the same), making a Report was
one feature that on testing did seem to function as expected...
Given that the software is written in BBC BASIC, the only element that
ought to be affected by hardware issues is presumably the sliding heap
module used for memory management?

Harriet: I have also seen the redraw problem with 'next record' - are
the other unchanged fields updated if another window is dragged across
them? What version of PB is that?

Oh, I hadn't tried that - yes, forcing a window redraw does update
the fields correctly!
Powerbase 10.32DA on ARMX6.

Its not a ROM re-flash. R-Comp provide a simple upgarde program that does
all the work for you and also gives you the option to roll back to the >previous version if you wish.

GOOD NEWS. There is now a new version of Powerbase to download.
