• Iris causing issues with !Safestore

    From Stuart@21:1/5 to All on Fri Oct 4 09:00:02 2024
    I recently had occasion to look into one of my backup files and discovered
    that many directories that should have been there weren't.

    I tried doing a manual copy and it stalled with files like this, where the
    heck are these coming from?
    Clearly something to do with Iris

    File: SCSI::Iyo.$.Fourtress_20240907.FOURtress.!Boot.Choices.WWW.Iris.cache.CacheStorage.1F21A503FF5823BEFA04482949F722905CA21026.Version 16.Records.828D14392E8E9BC5320AFD583E161CE5D44774D6.1ddc2efb-c3f7-4a4a-abd1-5da24d073367.
    00615AB0583A5BA24C7CABE64A7399FC115BCF47.

    I had been seeing errors from Safestore about files it couldn't copy but
    had assumed that, nevertheless, it would carry on and copy the rest of the files, it does not!

    My backups happen overnight and, generally speaking, I close down all applications before I go to bed; the only ones that sometimes get left are !Pluto, !POPStar, and !Newshound. However, Iris does sometimes cause
    issues, failing to shutdown properly when told to. I tend to use it
    sparingly often shutting down after each use.

    I had similar issues in the past, this is due to the files being open and
    in use by Iris when doing the backup.

    I fixed this by adding the path: !Boot.Choices.WWW.Iris to the "Ignore"
    section with your safestore backup job.

    Backup then works. It is not really necessary to backup that particular
    choice folder as it would be rebuilt by Iris if needed.

    !Sargasso is another application that has a file open all the time so I
    also exclude that application from the backup, as I can easily download
    again and I keep a copy of the zip file it can it (which gets backed up)

    If Iris fails to shutdown properly it usually means a webkit process is
    still running in the background. Just do an ALT-BRK and kill the process.
    This has always worked for me when needed.

    But I would also add the Iris path I mention previously to the ignore path
    in Safestore. It can't do any harm.

    I usually find multiple instances of the web and network processes, plus
    any number of DAs that need to be expunged. When you manage to kill the
    active process that's when the whole desktop freezes and you need
    ALT-Break. Even then it's difficult to get Iris to restart. It often loads
    and quits immediately. It might require two or three goes, or even a
    reboot. That suggests that Iris isn't initialising all of it's variables.

    Returning to topic... I'll give the exclude tip a go. Actually I don't get
    file contention very much. Usually it's transient files that have
    disappeared by the time SafeStore gets around to copying them. That causes error messages which can safely be ignored, but you still need to check.

    Odd, do you have your Choices folder elsewhere? Is it within your !Boot?

    Oh I have just thought, you are putting the full path into the ignore
    window i.e. NVMe::NVMe4.$.!Boot.Choices.WWW.Iris

    in my case.

    Oh I have just thought, you are putting the full path into the

    The path is automatically typed in for you - a quick recap...

    After selecting a particular job, I dragged Choices.WWW.Iris into
    the "Add item to ignore" window and it automatically displays the path
    as: SCSI::SSD.$.!BOOT.Choices.WWW.Iris. Clicking 'Path' icon
    gives the unexpected "source path tree" message.

    Can anyone else try this on an ARMX6 please and let me know?

    OK I think I have recreated this.

    The ignore path *must* be in the actual path you are trying to back up.

    If you are not backing up as part of your backup in this case !Boot, or !Boot.Choices then the ignore path will not be in the Path you are backing
    up hence the correct warning message!

    I can only imagine that this happens if you add the Choices file to a
    backup that doesn't comprise !Boot.

    Excellent Chris - I think that all makes sense. I'll try making
    Choices as a Backup job and test the Ignore again. As you may have
    guessed I don't backup the whole !Boot program or part of it - I always
    do this separately.
