• Iris failing on Ebay

From Stuart@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 1 08:00:02 2024
While browsing Ebay, using Iris, when I tick "Watch this item" I see this:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Pardon our interruption...

As you were browsing eBay, something about your browser made us think you
were a bot. There are a few reasons this might happen:

You're a power user moving through this website with super-human speed.
You've disabled JavaScript in your web browser.
A third-party browser plugin, such as Ghostery or NoScript, is preventing JavaScript from running.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there a way round this?

I get this on almost every page - it makes eBay unusable via Iris. I
think the problem is that the browser is running too *slowly* rather
    than too fast....

I have raised this with Richard Brown of RISC OS Developments, and he has investigated as says:

I have just played around with my Version of Iris (1.029 6-12-23) and I
can see the issue when I try to login to my account. So I went to
choices and changed the User Agent to the first one under Default. After closing any windows I then logged into my eBay account and browsed
around my purchases and eBay in general. I only had the issue on account
login not on general browsing. I am on a 4Te (RPI4) for hardware.

    My comment now:
Remember you can change the User Agent in Iris and that sometimes helps
with sites that are playing up.

    Hope it helps.

I get the same. My work-around involves iOS or macOS :-( It's not just
ebay - we need Iris to cope with all the usual captchas (and the other glitches like coming to a halt or going so slowly as to give that impression).

Did you see my posting about this with an answer supplied by Richard Brown
of RISC OS Developerment, just change the User Agent in Iris when
    necessary.

Iris is probably RISC OS's biggest application, and uses masses of memory
to work. Sadly we do not have hundreds of programmers or millions of
pounds to develop it, like Google or Firefox or even Apple.

    My comment now:
Remember you can change the User Agent in Iris and that sometimes helps
with sites that are playing up.

I tried to use Iris to view a page of Reddit (since Netsurf only
displays the question but never the replies). https://www.reddit.com/r/BreachWizards/comments/1fbgd1y/ending_options/?rdt=57183

The page just seems to stop loading at the point where it demands that
you either accept or reject cookies, and there is no way to get past
that however long you wait, even if you change the user agent and try
again. The loading indicator remains stationary, the mouse pointer
doesn't change to indicate that you can click on either of the buttons
(and nothing happens if you do click anywhere on the page) and you can't
even scroll the window. The app hasn't crashed, because you can click
Menu, but it isn't doing anything useful, and "Stop loading' and 'Reload
this page' don't have any obvious effect.

Hi, since a few days I installed Iris on my relatively new CM4 NVMe 5.31

I judge this SW as a non usable tool. (POJ)

a simple google search and it freezes the machine totally...
Some times even a new start does not work and so on and on and on....

Some of the crashes can be corrected only by power cycle of cm4 board.

I think I wait more than 1 year for next experiments with it, I have
a few more other computers arround to waste time with it ;-)

    My comment now:
Remember you can change the User Agent in Iris and that sometimes helps with sites that are playing up.

I tried to use Iris to view a page of Reddit (since Netsurf only
displays the question but never the replies). https://www.reddit.com/r/BreachWizards/comments/1fbgd1y/ending_options/?rdt=57183

I can't get into any sites that use CloudFlare 'performance and
security', either, even with the User Agent set to Mozilla - the
'verifying you are human/review the security of your connection' process
just goes round in an endless circle, e.g. https://www.tickettailor.com/events/kenningtonbioscope/1371001
