• Thump directory window size

From Harriet Bazley@21:1/5 to All on Mon Sep 2 15:43:03 2024
When I drag a large directory of images to the Thump icon, the window
that opens is always wide enough to fill most of the screen, which means
that the application takes forever to render and display all the
individual JPEG thumbnails. I normally use this feature to view and
process the most recent images in my digital camera's storage; I used
to wipe the old images immediately after I had downloaded them, but had
to replace the card and decided I had better not put the replacement
through any more read/write cycles than necessary, so now I only wipe it
when it is full. This means that I may have hundreds of photos in the directory, of which I am only interested in the last half-dozen or so.

I have 'Only load visible thumbnails' configured, but it doesn't help
much when there are that many thumbnails visible on screen and I am only interested in the ones *off* screen at the bottom of the window!
I don't really want to sit and wait for a full-width screen of
thumbnails to render, so the first thing I have to do every single time
I open the window is resize it to be only about 3 icons wide (and then
scroll down to the bottom, but that is unavoidable). Is there any way to configure the default size of the thumbnail viewer?

By the way, is Thump still available? I cannot find a download in my
files, and the last known URL (only a year ago) http://www.users.on.net/~belles/software/thump/ doesn't work today.

I'm not sure. I asked about this at the end of last year, and was told that
he was probably transitioning ISPs, or at least hosting providers:

    Presumably that hasn't yet happened...

The source code to a number of the applications is at

    https://www.riscos.info/websvn/

(so long as RISC OS.info is up, of course), and the ROOL thread above notes that some stuff is in the Wayback Machine.

Sadly it seems PlayIt is not available via SVN nor is the source zip
available from the wayback machine, at least from my tries.

I think Andrew Rawnsley may have have had source at one stage according to
some posts so perhaps not all is lost?

I can't see any option that allows a user to set the window size. I do
it in the same way as you have described on the Raspberry Pi 4 rather
than the ARMX6 which is just that much faster.

I tried the beta version of CacheFS to see if JPEG rendering on the
ARMX6 was faster but it makes no difference. When I tried it some while
ago it did make PDF rendering faster - perhaps I should have read the
ReadMe file more thoroughly as it makes no mention of helping jpeg
    rendering speed.

I appear to have it here if it comes to that -- I assume from context that
it must be 1.73 Release 2.

The licence is somewhat fuzzy, though...

I have been in touch with Chris Martin: Yes, he has had his ISP sell up,
so policy has changed: no free web space. But he has been very busy.

I think it's time to prod him again...
