Today's pub quiz trivia question. What is a Matilda?
(hint: it's not a woman. Or RISC OS related. I'll shut up
now.)

Nobody came up with an answer so I will reveal all.
a Matilda is the "swag" (all one's belongings) slung over the back.
Waltzing is slang for travelling on foot. A jumbuck is a sheep. A billy
is a lightweight cooking pot. A billabong is a watering hole.
Now sing that song with deep and reverent meaning, cobber.

I only know the words were written by Banjo Patterson.
Legend has it, the swagman was a shearer, Samuel Hoffmeister who drowned himself rather than be taken by the cops...

I think Banjo wrote the words and a lady who's name escapes me set it to music.

Indeed Chris... Legend has it... IIRC. Banjo was a wandering poet, and
at some sheep station a woman called Christina Macpherson took an old
Irish (Un-named) folk tune, fiddled with it a bit and mated it to
Banjo's poem.
Again, IIRC. While legends about the Waltzing Matilda song are legion,
the two facts that seem to be the real deal are; Banjo wrote the poem
and Christina fitted a tune to it.
Dave
Total aside... Just a muso thing... ;-)
"It don't mean a thing if It ain't got that swing..." (Duke Ellington).

It's been some years since I looked at the Matilda business, so I
thought I'd have a new looksee to memory refresh... :-)
Memory being what it is when dotage descends... Apparently it was a
Scottish folks song not Irish... :-/

Is an interesting overview of the legend. (BTW. A legend = 1 foot). :-)
