Is it possible to adapt any IBM internal LTO tape unit on a 170 model ?
Given the fact that 1/4 SLR tapes are not manufactured any more, would
it be possible to adapt and substitute a the SLR with a LTO type tape
unit in a single box 170 AS/400, (No expansion unit) with V5R3M0 ?
If so, which model would you recommend to substitute a SLR 6382 tape
unit and where to find it ?
I guess that we may need a SCSI adapter.
¿ Any experience ?
Technically though it is not officially supported, I know several people who have successfully replaced the internal QIC tape drive with an LT03 tape drive.
The problem is, you must also remove the CD drive, and saw the sheet metal in between those two bays, to "fit" the LT03 tape drive in there ...
Then, the trick is, the system will still recognize it as a QIC tape drive, but if you just insert an LT03 tape, and format it with *DEVTYPE, it should "just work" and you can do GO SAVE 21, full saves, and even IPL and restore from it.
Hope that helps ...
Thanks, we've got a brand new QIC SLR 30/60GB 6384 in order to replace
the defective old QIC 4/8 6382 tape unit. No need to saw nor remove the
CD drive, and given the amount of disk, it is sufficient to contain the
21 option in one volume instead of 3 cartridges in the old format. One
problem, was to find the tapes, the other: I am waiting for someone to
replace the tape unit. I suppose that it is not a very difficult task,
but I dare to be playing with the guts of that old machine given the
fact that IBM declined a year ago to continue it's maintenance service
for such an old hardware.
Thanks again.
