For those unfamiliar, our Hydra computer range allows RISC OS and Linux to co-exist at the same time on the same computer, bringing a wide range of
Linux software into your RISC OS desktop.
However, the big challenge was that the secondary Linux heads didn't have access to the HDMI port for audio, so the Linux head(s) remained muted.
After some months of R&D we are pleased to announce that this is now a
solved problem, with the Linux heads able to play audio alongside video.
This means that you can use the Linux head to watch videos on YouTube or
the BBC website, complete with audio. You can also use Linux for hobbies
such as radio or music creation/editing, all whilst running RISC OS.
Of course, the primary RISC OS head has always had audio capability, but
it is nice to extend this to the secondary Linux head(s) as well.
Also, for those who missed the announcement back in March, Hydra can now
also use the faster CM5 (Pi5-based) heads for Linux providing faster
throughput for Linux tasks. In fact, when testing this, that's the setup
we used.
Another new feature is that the CM5 Linux head is also capable of running
RISC OS at high speeds, meaning that if you have large number-crunching
jobs to do, they can be off-loaded to your Linux head (under RISC OS) and
left to churn whilst your main RISC OS head can do other things.
Existing users who need audio on their Linux head(s) should email us to
confirm compatibility - there's no charge for this update otherwise.
Finally, it is possible to upgrade from an RCI N.Ex.T box computer to
Hydra by simply adding heads. So, if all this talk has tickled your
fancy, drop us a line for upgrade information.
Best wishes,
Andrew
