When the game company makes you sign up for their e-mail newsletter in
order to get the game for "free".
And of course you have to sign up for their website to in order for the
game to work, but don't worry they won't sell your information ... much.
Sometimes "FREE" is too high a cost.

There's no such thing as a free lunch.
TANSTAFL: There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. (Larry Niven)
It's one of those words, like grok, I love dropping in a conversation
to see a) who gets it (yay!, fellow nerd!) and b) confuse all the
other rubes ;-)
There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Still, cheap lunches are common. Needing to sign up for Fanatical's or
GoG's newsletter for a free game and getting rid of them later by just unsubscribing is still cheap and easy.

The _time_ to keep doing that isn't "cheap" for some of us.

True, keeping your principals can be very expensive yet somehow selling
them never seems to turn a profit.
