"hey, let's upscale the textures and call it a day" work a lot of
remakes get --the game jumps from the tile-stepping of the original to
a fully 3D-rendered world where you can explore every nook and cranny, >similar to "RealMyst"--, and it's been nearly thirty years since the
last time the game saw a release, so it FEELS a lot more like a "new"
game than a lot of its competitors.

    It's still "Riven" though

Exactly. That "place the marbles" puzzle was basically for people on the spectrum, not neurotypical people.

I also intend to get it, but reading the FMV is gone is...disheartening I have to admit.

Prerendered FMV back then had a worse quality what low range GPUs
    nowadays can produce.
Prerendered FMV was a crutch. I still love FMV with real actors though,
but even that is probably better left off with 3d animations and voice
    acting by now!

Not if used sparingly. Zork wouldn't be the same without the FMV ride

I'm actually thinking of Myst's small videos of the actors talking to the player. When I saw those were gone it was very deflating.
