lots of people just use gmail because it's convenient
Yes, and as we all know, convenience trumps everything: cost, efficiency, security, even personal safety. (The latter might not apply to Usenet,
but it does to things like the 737 MAX.)
yes, but plenty of people who have a gmail address use real nntp servers instead of google groups, some folks elsewhere concocted their own
filters binning everyone matching
from:*@gmail.com
instead of
message-id:*@googlegroups.com
I've found that the massive flood of spam which has hit many newsgroups contains a tell-tale "Injection-Info" header. I use slrn, and by adding stanzas like the following to ~/News/Source:
[comp.*.*]
Score: =-9999
Expires: 9/14/2024
Injection-Info: google*
Newsgroup: comp\.*\.*
I lose all the spam while still seeing legitimate messages
from gmail vict^H^H^H^Husers.
