  • Lost ability to connect to PC from MAC

    This used to work. Searching Google only covers if it never worked. I
    can connect from VNC okay but I can no longer mount the PC in finder. I
    can see it but if I try to connect it says Connecting for a while and
    then it says it can't connect because

    The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this
    time. Check the server name or IP address, check
    your network connection, and then try again.


    The only thing that's different is I did a Windows update on the PC and
    it may have reset something. I have the drives set up for sharing and
    that wasn't changed. Any ideas on what else may have changed?

    Try rebooting your router, then rebooting both computers in question.

    Also, try choosing Go > Connect to Server on the Mac end entering the
    current IP address of the Windows computer.

    Didn't think of rebooting the router since VNC was working fine. Did
    reboot all computers

    This was doing the same thing. I use this when the PC doesn't show up
    in Locations->Network. This also started to work again. No idea why.

    Often, problems connecting to computers appearing in the Finder sidebar
    have to do with routing issues having to do with zeroconf/bonjour:

    Stale entries in the routing table are often the cause. Rebooting the
    router removes those stale entries. Rebooting the computers afterwards
    allows them to refresh their caches as well.

    The router is usually the first suspect in such cases.
