• Appleworks 5.1 Install

    Is there a clean Appleworks 5.1 install disk set? The one from Asimov, when you run the installer is looking for the install program....

    David Finnigan's site MacGui has good copies of the 'Install' and the
    'Program' for AppleWorks 5.1.

    The Program disk:
    <https://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1970>

    The Install disk:
    <https://www.macgui.com/downloads/?file_id=1969>

    Boot from the Install disk to start the installer program.

    Note that these disks appear to have already had the version 5.1 patches applied, unlike the original disks that shipped from SQC.

    And for reference, here is a link to the Notes file on the Program disk
    which explains the 5.1 changes: https://www.macgui.com/spyglass/r/f5f81888f4a97478/Notes?f=DmxscGB1&fk=d3bf24ba07

    Here is a link to notes on Randy Brandt's free patcher for AppleWorks on the Install disk: https://www.macgui.com/spyglass/r/5f2dda0f0bb1ba7d/RFP.Docs?f=DnBldAtiaGt6&fk=3cb55b54e7

    Since David mentioned the notes to Randy Brandt's free patcher, I'll mention the following note from that file:

    GSOS background tasks: Normally AW disables GSOS background events like the
    ProSel calendar and Twilight II's screen blanking. However, you may use this option to re-enable those features. If your AW starts having problems,
    you may want to disable them again. We haven't figured out why AW works on some IIgs's and not on others when these features are enabled.

    AppleTalk macros: Normally AppleWorks disallows macros if AppleTalk is active, due to potential crashing problems. However, many users have success with a network active if ProSel is used to launch AppleWorks, so this patch allows macros to function if you set it to Yes.

    These patches were attempts to correct a mysterious problem that resulted in IIGS users crashing into the monitor when launching AppleWorks 5.1 from the Finder. Randy (and others at the time) made the observation that launching
    from ProSel 16 (instead of the Finder) prevented the mysterious problem.

    Well, years later I disassembled Bredon's P16to8 program to find out exactly what Bredon was doing. It dealt with interrupts and location 01/0100 in Aux
    Mem (where UltraMacros runs).

    So, I created an AppleWorks init file that, when dropped into the AW.INITS directory, fixes this issue for good. You can run UltraMacros, AppleTalk,
    GSOS background events, and Launch from the GS/OS Finder without problem.

    That program, part of my AppleWorksInitPack and called FinderLaunch (I.FINDERLAUNCH), is available here:

    <http://www.apple2works.com/appleworksinitpack/>

    An explanation of this problem in much more detail is located within the
    source code listing, which is also there.

    Got those disks and when you run it and pick option 4 it doesn't work. I had to manually run the install system and then it worked fine.
