That's why I asked about the configuration, if there are 0 drives and no >>> power supply modules, what't the choice then?

hi guys
it is an anchor... BUT... it is fully populated... and I could do with the system
as a 3.rd line of defence(backup wise)...
but otherwise I agree completely
but then again.. I can take all the disks and put them into the Sparc server standing next
to the A-1000 ....
Anyhow thanks for the feedback. just wondered if there was a quickfix...
One think to be aware of is that the A1000 interface is hvd,
high voltage (5v) differential scsi, not the later and more
usual lvd interface. Adaptec and others make a pci card
and there are sun pci and S-bus cards as well. Best not
to connect that box to an lvd controller, as you can fry one
or both of them. Fwir, they are simple jbod arrays, with no
smart controller. Power consumption ~100 watts with a few
drives in the box, so not too serious.
Now that I remember what an A1000 is ... :-)
There are two versions of that -- with the 1000 number but a
different letter in front. One is hardware RAID, the other is JBOD, and
one can be converted to the other by changing the backplane. I got one
of the RAID ones, and did not know how to configure it, but found the
alternate backplane on eBAy, and that turned it into two 6-drive JBODs,
which could be set up so with a jumper cable between the output side of
the first section and the input side of the second, could have
non-conflicting SCSI IDs for each drive.
O.K. The D1000 is the dual JBOD -- and the backplane I talked
about plugs in above the two hot-swap power supplies.
The plug-in card which makes it a dual JBOD is 375-0008. There
were several version of the RAID board, with them being: 375-0007,
375-0015, 375-0016, 375-0134, 375-0135, and 375-0136. There is also a
plug-in battery to keep the RAID info set up during power outages,
370-3553. You need some kind of password to configure one of those,
while the D1000 has no problems, being a JBOD.
Search for document 805-2624, which:
====================================================================== Provides installation, configuration information and service procedures
to customers and service personnel for the Sun StorEdge A1000 and D1000 systems.
======================================================================
I think I have a couple of those boxes in store, free if you
can collect them from the UK. Also may have some dec lvd <> hvd
adapters as well...
Good Luck,
DoN.
