Arriving a bit earlier than expected, here's the final game of the
Classic Marathon trilogy: "Marathon Infinity" https://store.steampowered.com/app/2398520/Classic_Marathon_Infinity/
All the usual caveats apply; it's a boomer-shooter made in the
boomer-shooter era, so expect nonsensical level design, a lack of quality-of-life features we now take for granted, and annoying
key-card quests. It's gameplay is slower paced than its contemporaries
too, so don't go into it expecting "Doom". And, yes, you can play this
game for free without a Steam account if you download the Aleph One*
version. It's just more convenient on Steam.
That said, this -and all the Classic Marathon games- mostly exist for
diehard fans and people who have a historical interest in the series
(either to see what Bungie was doing before Halo, or to see what FPS
games were like in the mid to late 90s). Personally, even I don't find
it much fun to actually play.
That won't stop me from clicking the 'add to library' button, of
course. The Number must grow!
