As far as I recall that's the way to include cards that are not
precisely MCA cards but base on older ISA-designs and are only adopted
to MCA bus and identified with that. They have the IO ports to send a
card-ID ... but the parameter settings are done with generic ISA-style
    I/O operations.
Cards may or may not have an EEprom to store the setting or a piece of
software that initializes them during startup.

    Hi !

Reminds me of the Magni VGA Producer, no ADF...

Well - *technically* MCA allowes barebone I/O operations within the
lower 8-bit adress range, which is a base operation used for
non-intelligent or non-DMA-based interfaces. Even the reading of the systemboard ports to gain the ADF data is a simple I/O operation.
So essentially it is not required to identify a card against the machine
    to get it operational.

*However* this is not the way MCA was designed to operate and it cannot
do autoconfiguration and distribute ressources when it has no infos on
what ressorces are already used by "other" cards and interfaces. It is
like operating an early ISA machine with no PnP where you had to
scribble down the I/O ports, interrupts, use of memory space and
suchlike. And run in a pithole or crash the machine if you make an error.

So Non-ADF-cards were unicorns in a way and derived 1:1 from their
ISA-cousins with only adapting them to the MCA connector - just to
"offer something". Someone did quite a lousy job.

Did you try the ones Louis linked? It is the same chipset so there is a
chance it is suitable especially with what Peter wrote.
