The auto 16/4 token-ring adapters provide enhanced workstation
performance today and, because they are enabled for full-duplex
operation, you can take greater advantage of your current investment.
The full-duplex function provides you with the capability to work with token-ring full-duplex switches that will allow your departments to
implement leading-edge, high-bandwidth applications like multimedia with
no hardware upgrade required. What's more, the adapter's internal
microcode in FLASH memory, not EPROM, can be upgraded for changes, if
    needed, or enhanced functions.

So, they could.. maybe... possumbly do FDX. Software limitation?

The only FDX snippet I remember is "Contact IBM for more information"

In the 'DrvList' PDF, the first column does sometimes show if that era of covered adapters support FDX (and RPL): http://ps-2.kev009.com/pccbbs/network/drvlist.pdf
