    Back in the day, IBM's mainframes could use ESCON links as a form of Channel-to-Channel adapter, which means that it could be used as a communication media between two mainframes (or many mainframes if you used multiple links), which was a cheaper way to
    go than buying a 3088 or 37x5 (3705, 3725, 3745). I never played with the MCA ESCON adapters, maybe they could do something similar, though Token-Ring or Ethernet would be easier.

    Easier, but much slower.

    The limited surfing that I've done does not hint at Win9x/NT drivers,
    the PCI version had some sordid "host" connection support, I >think<.

    10MB/s (Bus/Tag ?) or 17MB/s (fiber ?) not chopped liver...

    Be wary of those "theoretical maximum" rates, true ESCON throughput rates resembled USB rates of today (USB 2.0 max of 480Mbps - 60 MBps is almost never seen, 20MBps is typical for thumbdrives). Better than the S/370 Bus/Tag max of 4.5MBps? Yes.
    Better than 100 Mbps Ethernet? No.
