Back in the day, IBM's mainframes could use ESCON links as a form of Channel-to-Channel adapter, which means that it could be used as a communication media between two mainframes (or many mainframes if you used multiple links), which was a cheaper way to
go than buying a 3088 or 37x5 (3705, 3725, 3745). I never played with the MCA ESCON adapters, maybe they could do something similar, though Token-Ring or Ethernet would be easier.
