    Continuing the last post I had posted here on this topic, I'd just like to know:

    How come DOWNLOADABLE movies and music and so on didn't happen, then? Why has the world shifted to streaming?

    Probably more for commercial reasons than technical -- the content
    providers like to keep control and know how many times programs are
    watched.

    But most streaming services now offer download options. You can download
    with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+. And there's a third-party application "PlayOn Cloud" that allows downloading from many other
    services (it's like a DVR for streaming).

    They did. Both legally and illegally.

    I can purchase movies and music for download via iTunes today.

    I've been able to do similar for about 20 years.

    At the risk of pointing you to a cesspool, "Digital Rights Management".

    Most streaming services require a special player that unlocks the DRM
    content to be played. Doing this as a stream means that people
    (usually) don't have the raw data that is downloaded. In the rare case
    that someone is creative, they usually don't have the keys to unlock
    what they … creatively captured.
