VAX Pascal v1 was a pain to use, but v2 was a completely different
compiler, with all kinds of neat extensions (including being able to pass function/procedure arguments by keyword).
And Borland’s Turbo Pascal was a UCSD derivative, with its own interesting extensions.
So the critics were likely right about (standard) Pascal being of limited
use, without some sort of extensions.
