X11 happens to a be a MATURE software project, which means it
really does not require any constant upgrading of functionality.
X11 only needs to be occasioanally maintained to accommodate
new hardware, security fixes, etc.
On my Gentoo system, there are minor versions of X11 components being
regularly released.
Yet the vast majority of GNU/Linux users are completely captivated
by the mainstream distros who are perfectly willing to throw away
huge swaths of past software for no good reason other than they
are not "modern" (in their twisted definition of "modern").
I want to use FVW3, which is very activley developed, forever
but FVWM3 won't function with Wayland.
Furthermore, after 17 years of development (!) Wayland is far
from being mature or even stable.
