  • $100 For OEM Windows

    I had long assumed that PC makers couldn’t offer a significant
    discount if you bought a PC without Windows, because of the crapware
    subsidy: lots of other companies were paying the PC makers to include demoware/crippleware/adware on the preinstallation, and this made up
    (possibly even more than made up) for the cost of the Windows licence.

    Maybe the days of crapware are over, I don’t know. Here is a Lenovo
    machine that you can get for $100 less if you leave out Windows and
    choose Ubuntu instead <https://www.zdnet.com/article/this-linux-friendly-mini-pc-drives-up-to-six-monitors-and-saves-space-in-the-office/>.

    That’s quite a substantial discount, which makes the Linux option
    even more attractive.

    That was Lenovo's first mistake. They should be charging $300 more for
    the Ubuntu installation and everyone would immediately clamor for it.

    That's cool. I don't know if I've ever seen that kind of clear
    upcharge for Windows, before.
