XPost: comp.os.linux.misc, comp.os.linux.hardawe
I was viewing a YouTube video (via yt-dlp of course) about differential
forms. The author was using software called "Scientific Workplace."
I decided to check it out.
SW is just another cheap GUI wrapper around the open-source LaTeX
plus other stuff. However, the commercial company, after 40 years,
is now bankrupt and out of business. All of its users are now in the
lurch.

Who would ever entrust their work to a commercial enterprise that
is always in danger of going bust? Even Adobe Photoshop could one
day soon collapse into nothing.
For scientific markup, if you need a GUI, just use Lyx, TeXmacs,
or WxMaxima.
FOSS projects can also become abandoned but with a large enough
user base and the available source code longevity is much more
assured.
