• OpenBSD - HOW To Auto-Login ???

From c186282@21:1/5 to All on Wed May 21 00:27:45 2025
Yea, not quite the right group - but the OBSD groups,
well, the latest threads are like YEARS 7old.

    Installed '77'.

Note that 'slim' is declared obsolete and won't
install. Can't go that way. 'lightdm' isn't even
in the package tree so can't use it's autologin
stuff. Can't even find out how to CHANGE the
    default DM ...

/etc/rc.conf = "su - username" does NOT work.

Look, power failures happen. I've got my little
BSD box BIOS to reboot on such events ... but
    auto-LOGIN ..........

Oh, did install XFCE successfully and it even
starts a VNC server and it WORKS. The IDEA here
is to auto-login to the user - and then set the
    power/screen manager to timeout-needing-password
in maybe 10 minutes. PRETTY secure. More than
good enough for a 'home' system.

Clean auto-login is a bitch even in Linux,
seems even MORE so in BSD.

And, sorry, there IS NO "gettty' file to turn
    into a script.

Note : OpenBSD is MORE CRUDE than FreeBSD - but
as reported I had a HORRIBLE self-trashing with
the latest FBSD, ruining a days worth of work, so.

OBSD does not have AS many packages, OBSD has
stupider package handling. 'pkg_mgr' managed to
DELETE everything I'd installed rather than
updating it. 'appmanager' isn't working right
and won't list/search. At least FBSD had 'octopackage'
which is kinda like synaptic. Kinda had to KNOW that
existed btw ... almost NO mention in web sites.
    NO such thing in OBSD

I think the assumed BSD paradigm is 'text/ssh'-only
SERVERS. Well, SOME of us want something a bit different.

Hey - even knowing WHAT'S out there - a GREAT reason
for synaptic style GUIs. The BSDs seem to assume
you "just know" ...... maybe THREE people do ......

ANYway ... IF anyone has any recent knowledge/tweaks/tricks
PLEASE point to a web site or whatever ! Practical examples
are way better than 'theory', TOO old to learn all the
    nuances of an exotic OS.

    Oh well, there's always Plan-9 ... :-)

I have a few Linux boxes (pref MX) but this
is my 'exotic' box. This will NEVER include
    Winders ! Would rather install CP/M-86 ....

AAAAUUUGHH ! "Team America" on TV !!! :-)
The Jackie Chan movie was too short ....

Note there were 'puppet' series in the
    early 60s ... stuff like "Fireball XL-5".
Hey, if you were 6 it looked perfectly OK ...

    Try https://www.reddit.com/r/BSD/ . It's not exactly a high volume
subreddit but it's not a ghost town either.

I just read this article about GhostBSD. I've never used it, but it
sounds more like what you're looking for:

I tried Ghost a few years ago. All in all it's
    pretty damned nice.

    Dragonfly is also nice.

Both seem to have made the adaptation that fits
between 'servers' and 'general use'. Whichever
you need. Kind of the same niche as OpenSUSE.

I still use SSH access a lot, but that does
preclude a lot of more modern, useful, stuff.
I want at least VNC access if needed.

For NOW I'm disillusioned by both FBSD and OBSD.
Try as I could I could NOT get to that spot I
really wanted. OBSD *is* really 'crude'. This is
not my first rodeo ... was willing to do some
weird shit with both to achieve my goals, but,
as said, I'm hardly 13 anymore with infinite
energy and determination. It either works
more or less, or it goes in the trash bin.

My mini-box ... put plain MX on it, I'll find
    SOME use for now .........

STILL rec the BeeLink/BMax mini boxes ... great
Linux performance for low $$$. Most variants
have space for a SATA drive - rec Samsung 8xx SSD.

OpenSUSE ... It IS good, but I've got low
bandwidth. The two variants are also an
annoyance. Tumbleweed - ANY update means
updating EVERYTHING. The other, well, it's
almost time for a complete distro version.
OS is also kinda 'fat' ... now 4+ gb and
    runs a bit slow.

HAD been using Manjaro - but, again, same
update paradigm. Almost EVERY update and you
wind up reloading 95% of the system .....

Only ONE Manjaro box left now.

Oh, even MX ... STILL have the common problem
with using VNC - doesn't always 'take' with
the usual autostart paradigm. Oft have to
log in with SSH, kill it, then manually
restart the server. Gonna try a SCRIPT in
the autostart ... start it, kill it, restart,
with a few secs in-between. MIGHT work.
