Should I be able to make this work?

Update: I had only tried one USB stick. I just tried another, and it
worked just fine. Experimenting with other sticks now.

Further testing has shown that some USB sticks work, and some don't. All
    are FAT32.

Of the stick I have to test with, two don't work with the phone (no
    response):

    Samsung 128GB
    Patriot RAGE2 128GB

Four that do work with the phone are:

    PNY 4GB
    ONN 16GB
    Patriot 32GB
    Lexar 64GB

Maybe 128GB is too large for the Android system? I would think not, but my knowledge of Android is very limited.

Seems to be a size limitation of your phone. Not Android per se, but of
the phone and the software it has installed. Can happen.

Have you checked what filesystems your thumbdrives are formatted with ?
