Try rebooting the phone.

I sometimes try to connect my phone to my computer to copy photos and
other files, and 9 times out of 10 the phone only sees it as a
charger. It's sometimes necessary to reboot the phone and/or the
computer several times to get the phone to "see" the connection.

How is the USB drive formatted? FAT, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ext, or something else?

When you plug the USB flash drive into a desktop PC or laptop, can it
see the media files on it?

Did you configure Android to recognize the USB port as an MTP device?
Under Developer Options(*), find Select USB Configuration. What is your
set to? Some settings are:

Charging: USB port only usable for charging. Data lines are ignored.
MTP: Use this instead of PTP.
PTP: Another media protocol.

If you're trying to copy the contents of the stick to the phone, then
why not plug both into a PC and drag and drop from one to the other?

When I upgraded my phone, I had the problem of copying all my stuff from
the old to the new, and couldn't use the default Android method because
the old phone was running too old a version. After various copy apps
from the store had failed to copy it all without some fairly major fuck
up or other, I simply connected both to a PC and got a much more
sensible result using Explorer!

files back and forth. But plugging a flash stick (FAT32) to the phone gets
me nowhere.

the phone--files that are located on the flash drive.

Also, when in the field, using a trail camera that does not have a viewing screen, I'd like to be able to plug the SD card into a card reader, and
plug that to the phone, and be able to view the photos/videos.

I was hoping that the "go" cable would allow me to use flash sticks and
card reader like external storage on the phone, but so far, I'm dead in the water.

Needs to be a proper USB OTG (On-The-Go) cable. I once tried to use a
cable that seemed correct, but was not actually an OTG cable, and it
simply did not work.
