• Phone usually doesn't' work

From micky@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 5 23:37:58 2025
Any idea what's going on here? A Xiaomi phone with Android 14 iirc. I
picked a friend up at National Airport. She had called me yesterday on
her cell. She had called me today to my cell to tell me she had landed.
But then her phone stopped working. She had to get some stranger to
call me the next time. Later her son called her and that worked fine
for 10 minutes, and then she called her friend to tell her she landed
and would be coming soon and that worked fine, but then her phone
    stopped working again.

When we got to the friend's, I saw that she had 5 bars, but when I
tapped on any of the people she had previously called, it immediately
displayed the dialing page and immediately reverted to the list of prior
calls page. I called the other 2 numbers, the same thing happened.

This was probably when I noticed she had no bars, though I hadn't moved
    from my chair.

I reset the bluetooth, wifi, and mobile connections. The bars did not
    come back.

I rebooted the phone, the bars did not come back.

I turned on airplane mode, then turned it off. The bars came back.

I made a phone call and instead of revering immediately, it took about a
minute before her phone hung up.

I called someone else. The bars were gone and It reverted immediately.

I turned airplane mode on and off. the bars came back. Repeated 2 steps
    before this with same results.

Used airplane mode to bring the bars back again and tried to bring up a webpage. Got a negative message about not being online, or something.

Connected her to her hostess's wifi, web browser worked fine.

I called her cell from my phone. Got some negative message about her
    being unreachable.

Called again just now from my phone. Displays message immediately "Call
ended" and reverted to contact list after 7 seconds, each time.

What's wrong. How do I fix it?

Are you suggesting fortune-telling on coffee grounds? There can be many reasons, from being blocked by an operator to unstable communication in a particular area.

It sounds like the battery is low, and on standing slightly recovers.

If it were mine I would charge it and see what happens. If possible I
would use a different charger, as the connection on that charger may be damaged, or the charger burned out.

Once Charged I would do a reset, and if that fails I would do a factory
reset. Be aware a Factory reset will loose local data in the internal
storage. If all that failed I would set it in the garbage can.

It sounds like the battery is low, and on standing slightly recovers.

You're right. The battery is low, 24 to 20%. She should have charged
it last night. I'm going to go over there in a while.

If it were mine I would charge it and see what happens. If possible I
would use a different charger, as the connection on that charger may be >damaged, or the charger burned out.

Maybe so. She had the phone on all day but I would think she charged it
    the night before a flight.

Once Charged I would do a reset,

You mean a connection reset, right? Okay.

and if that fails I would do a factory
    reset.

Be aware a Factory reset will loose local data in the internal
storage. If all that failed I would set it in the garbage can.

On my Motorola, there are two resets. One just resets the software, and
the other returns the phnoe to original factory conditions.

I was referring to the software reset.

WHile I don't see what a connection reset (I assume a reset with the
carrier) I don't see how that would affect the problem you are
experiencing. As the commericial many years age "Try it you will like
it" It can not hurt any thing.

Dear sir, would you be so kind as to go to the ass? Since I'm writing from fidonet, I definitely don't give a fuck about your inconvenience.

    Not a problem.

You should consider reverting to factory settings and re-setting up the
phone again leaving off any dodgy looking apps. Which can be a real
PITA, especially if you don't use a Google account. But it also might be
    a hardware fault.

Yes, she has lots of stuff in her phone, a long contact list and I don't
know what else but she only has 2 gigs empty out of 64 or 48 iirc.

She'd have to backup all this stuff, and I'd have to show her, And I
don't remember how either. That would be a separate thread, but I'm
    tired of this.

She's sick. She's an American covered by medicare but living abroad and
she's here for medical treatment. I picked her up at National Airport in
rush hour Thurdsay to take her to Baltmore, 1:30 each way.

That night I learned about wifi-calling (which would help when she could connect to wifi) and that she had to implement it, and learned about
VoLTE**. I did talk to her on the phone and she couldn't find that
option and her phone is newer than mine so maybe on her phone it's

the description on my phone is "Use VoLTE to improve the quality of
voice calls" because, I think, at the time the phone was made, 5 or so
years ago, 3G was everywhere, and now it's nowhere, and now the phone
doesn't work at all unless you turn on VoLTE. Did I get that right?

She'd pressured me to take her to the Boost Mobile store, but we didn't
agree on when, and I went over Friday and she and her hostess were on
their way out and she wouldn't even let me look at the phone during the
5 or 10 minutes when they weren't leaving yet. I like her and she's in
her 80's, but she gets on my nerves sometimes.

Now I have to take her to a doctor in Rockville on Monday and a doctor
in Baltimore on Tuesday. She did say she'd take me out to dinner on
Monday evening but I don't have time to go.

    But it also might be
    a hardware fault.

Yes, a bad connection that goes in and out, maybe.

well enough. But the previous doctors agreed she should try again. Hate
to say it but I'll have a lot more spare3 time when she's gone.

They eye doctor said the previous doctors did a good job, by saving her
eye. Others might have taken it out. But he wouldn't do more surgery
and warned against it becuase it could make things worse. Cause her to
lose the eye. AFAICT the injury -- someone shot at her and part of her
glasses went into her eye-- went beyond the lens and to the cornea. This
guy specializes not just in eyes but in corneas. And her good eye is
not all that good either, because of age. Things are distorted with only
one eye. For examples, she can't see curbs and is afraid she'll trip,
and she sees the trees along the road as closer than they are and about
to hit her. And she's afraid she'll be totally blind. I didn't know
what to say to make her feel better.

Exactly. I think I said that.
