• I don't want to have group chats with people I don't know.

From micky@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 1 23:32:38 2025
How is it that I am in a group chat? I didn't join on purpose, or by
accident. I didn't do anything to join, and I don't think I ever got an invitation. it's happened more than once.

This is in the texting app that came with my Xiaomi phone. I do use the
    app, but not for this.

And I don't see any chatting, Only phone numbers and the first message
at 4;15PM on Friday, was that a specified phone number "created this
group chat" and under i for information was that there were 9 other
people in the chat. Then at various times, 7 of them left the chat.
None of them had an area code for my area.

Is this spam of some sort? Can I ignore it or would it better if I could
I stop this from happening? If I call the number who started it, am I looking for trouble.

Yes, it's spam. Your number, like the rest of ours, is either on a list,
or has been randomly picked. There aren't that many phone numbers, unfortunately. Why these group chats get started, I don't know.
Considering that more often than not there's no messages sent to it by
the initiator, I assume they're created to probe active numbers,
which is confirmed when someone leaves the chat - it proves a real
    person has the phone number.

You can and should ignore it. If you can swing blocking texts from
numbers not in your contact list, I recommend doing it. That's not
feasible for everyone though. If anyone knows a better way, I'd love to
know it - I can't afford to block unknown numbers.

I don't see what could be gained by attempting to call the numbers that
start these stupid group chats. At best it won't actually go anywhere,
at worst you're just confirming to them that your number is real,
ensuring more spam in the future.

Sorry, these are the times we live in I guess.

Great answer but what does "swing blocking texts from numbers not in my
    contact list" mean?

    That's not
    feasible for everyone though.

Especially since I dont' know what it means. :-)

Used to be there were only 4 ways to reach someone, letter, phone,
telegram, or personal messenger, and in practice only 2 ways, but now
there are many and yet people are harder to reach. Ironic, huh?

If you try to leave this chat they will send you a terminator.

If the app allows you to be placed in a group chat without consent then
it is the app which is the problem. Perhaps it has a setting to prevent
this? otherwise maybe use a different app.

You were invited by the administrator of the group.

In Spain, it is a criminal offence to be added to a group without
    permission.

If it is in WhatsApp, you may get the name of the individuals in gray
(besides the number), if they are not in your contact list.

I didn't know about Spam chat groups.

You might block the administrator, and then he can not add you again.

I tried to block the person who began the chat, but I couldn't find that option. It did offer for me to remove him from the group, from his own
group, so I did that! But it's probably for no avail, since it dawned
on me afterwards that that still confirms that my number is a real
number. A bad deal for me since these group chats were rare and I
usually didn't know about htem until I turned the phone on, and then
only if I looked at my textign app I only get a few spam phone calls
now, one a day or so. We'll see if it increases.

    Thanks, and thanks all.

I don't have any group on messages, so I can not check. Just ban his
