On a Samsung S-10 the contents of the 'documents' folder is exactly the
same 200 files that constitute the contents of the 'documents' folder on
the SD card which is listed separately on the data backup page. What
    gives here?

Assuming you don't mean your *backup* has gor two folders with the same contents, whats the chance that your Samsung's 'documents' folder *is* the folder on the SD card ?

You could try to test that by seeing if you can put that SD card into a
'puter, add a document, put it back into your phone and see what the phones 'documents' folder now says. If the added document also appears there you
    have your answer.

It's not my phone and I have only brief temporary access to it, but the
backup I made followed the list-items shown by android and two
'document' folders were separate but identical; I guess you 'can' make a
backup of data to the sd card so theoretically there could be plenty of duplicate data in one phone. There's none in my phone as I don't keep
data in it at all, it could also be that there are plenty of similarly duplicated pictures for example with similarity of content not being
quite as evident (there were 9000 pictures, I did no sorting at all).
