Why do I get most of the text messages 2 or 3 times, identical text,
listed in Details as sent at the identical time.

Usually doctors or businesses send 3 times but today I got two from a
    friend and both came twice.

And strangly if you call them F(irst) and S(econd), they display in the
reader as F, S, F, and S. so the second F was send 20 minutes before the
two S's, but it displays after the first S.

Until recently I didn't know how to tell when they were sent, but now I
    do know how.

Spotty signal not able to ack reception reliably so the msg gets sent
    again by the carrier?

That makes sense. It doesn't seem to account for F, S, F, S, but that
just reflects how they are displayed, not sent or received. Anyhow I'm satisfied enough that I'm not going to try to rephase the question.
Sorry to others about my ambiguity. .
