From Adam@21:1/5 to All on Mon May 6 09:56:36 2024
Received barely audible voice message from 510-854-4017 asking to call 888-803-33x6 or 888-803-336x. Something about "pending action".

How to protect oneself from fraud ?

The best advice, meaning no disrespect, is: don't be an easy mark.
Any vague call like the one you received is overwhelmingly likely to
be a scam. It's lucky you couldn't hear the numbers in the message.
If you called one of them, they would almost certainly (try to)
persuade you to reveal information that they would then use to drain
your existing accounts or open new accounts in your name, or both.

Never, never, never respond to someone who calls you about financial
matters. It is best not to speak at all in these unsolicited calls,
because they can record your voice and use it to substantiate bogus transactions.

If the call seems to be legit, hang up (or don't answer) and call
your financial institution yourself, using the number on the back of
your card or on printed statements they have previously sent you.
Avoid googling the phone number, because you may be taken to a
spoofing site that _looks_ legit but actually directs you to a boiler
    room of fraudsters.

Not calling back. If they want something from you they will come back.
Our policy is: We do not answer calls where we do not know the number or
the name of the caller and let them proceed to the answering machine.

That solves 90% of the cases.

I had a series of harassment calls from one of those, they just don't
bother with much research and simply flood all people with the debtor's
name which can be in the hundreds. I warned them and they promptly quit
but laws should prevent this kind of abuse.

Google searches are getting worse and worse, month by month and year
    by year.

Giving a hit with a partly different phone number is not an example of
gettting worse. They always have given close when they can't find
    exact.

I noticed that Google Translate has gone downhill too.

I've seen several major improvements in Google translate. For example
with one or more languages that don't use the Latin alphabet, you can
now write the word phonically *using* the Latin alphabet anyhow, saying
that the input language is the real language, and it will transliterate
to the (usually) correct spelling in the real alphabet, and then
clicking again willl translate it to English or whatever language. I
don't think they advertise this improvement, but it's great if you don't
know the other alphabet or don't know how to spell in it.

If you think they displayed a mistake, you can always, from that very
    page, send a correction.

I tried to learn Mandarin for a few weeks, but the fact that google was >unable to understand what I said

What you said? Not what you wrote. I'm not surprised.

Chinese is notorious for small changes in tone or pitch or something
making the word mean something different.

90% of the time convinced me that it
    was hopeless.

It might well be hopeless from google translate, but that certainly
doesn't mean it's gotten worse. They didn't even have speech to text
for any language until maybe 10 years ago, so having it at all is an improvment. I'm sure Chinese came several years after English for
    example.

It worked for French, Spanish and German, but not

Yes, its speech to text works in English, and in my 3-week trip to
Guatemala in January it worked great for Spanish. I'd ask people to
speak into the phone and even when I couldnt' tell where one word ended
and another word began, even when his whole sentence sounded like one
long word, Google would get it and translate it correctly. When I saw
it in print, I recognized that that's what he'd said.

Mandarin. I am apparently reasonably good at imitating language sounds,
but not Mandarin. Or else google is not good at hearing them.

It's very difficult to say chinese right, And that might also mean it's
hard for google to hear it right. Two problems in a row.

Thoughts about open source search engine?

I wonder if Duck Duck Go just provides a front end to google.

    I would think so.

Zero Value. Waste of resources and time.

That solves 90% of the cases.

Google search on the number 510-854-4017

    returns this page
    https://directory.youmail.com/phone/510-248-4017

    (510) 248-4017 is a Debt Collector
Name Debt Collector Location Fremont, CA US

I saw that too, and nearly posted the same thing. But I noticed in
time that the phone number returned in the Google results is not the
same as the phone number searched for (854 versus 248).

Google searches are getting worse and worse, month by month and year
    by year.

I noticed that Google Translate has gone downhill too.

I tried to learn Mandarin for a few weeks, but the fact that google was unable to understand what I said 90% of the time convinced me that it
was hopeless. It worked for French, Spanish and German, but not
Mandarin. I am apparently reasonably good at imitating language sounds,
but not Mandarin. Or else google is not good at hearing them.

Thoughts about open source search engine?

I wonder if Duck Duck Go just provides a front end to google.

I believe it uses Bing mainly. It's quite useful from the security point
of view and can get rid of much of the tripe that Google produces but I
always come back to Google because the results are much more varied and extensive.

Giving a hit with a partly different phone number is not an example of gettting worse. They always have given close when they can't find

Indeed. Keith (Nuttle) probably didn't do an exact search, because if
you do - i.e. double quotes around the phone number - the first result
    *does* list the specified number.

    I use https://www.startpage.com/

Google is redundant and they even announce that they track their users.

Oops! Sorry! Similar mistake (as Keith made). The correct number *is*
listed in the Google hit, so you have to *re-do* the search on the
    YouMail site:

    <https://directory.youmail.com/phone?phoneNumber=5108544017&>

    "(510) 854-4017 was a Legal Complaint Scam"
