Some comments on the readers above that I use/have used:

Piahhong's Newsgroup: It got/has a posting bug. The carriage returns are
gone. It still works but when you post you have to manually separate the
    lines. A PITA.

Groundhog: It won't post after Android 9. The menu is gone. However it still
will read and is easier to use than PhoNews for reading. So I use it on my
Android devices for reading and when I want to post I switch over to
    PhoNews.

PhoNews: I use it on my Chrome devices (like this Chromebook I'm now posting
with). For security reasons my Chrome devices don't allow sideloading so I
have to use what's in the Play Store. I bought this PhoNews Pro for 2 bucks
several years ago and it seems to do the job. I used to think it wouldn't
cross post but that may have been my error as I see that the Newsgroup line
above on this posting page can in fact be edited. It's not automatically
transferred from the reader page like my other newsreaders were. I'll have
to test it on the next crosspost I respond to. Sorry for the past slander
PhoNews (I think, time will tell)...

Have you considered using a browser to access Usenet, eg with
Newsgrouper (<https://cmacleod.me.uk/ng>. You can try it out without registering, although it will be read-only. This NG appears at <https://cmacleod.me.uk/ng/comp.mobile.android>, and if you scroll down
to the end you will see this thread.

There are other browser-interface Usenet apps available, such as novaBBS
    at <https://www.novabbs.com/common/grouplist.php>.

Of course I've used a browser to read Usenet news, and, in fact, I have group-specific shortcuts on my Android homescreen so I can read the various groups I care about most - but the print is tiny given how small the phone
is compared to a full-sized desktop monitor.

Here are some archive links so that everyone else can make those shortcuts.

Is there a usable Android newsreader?
I used to use Groundhog, but that one hasn't been maintained for a few
years (and the apk can be installed but doesn't play well with my
    current Android phone).
I also have PhoNews, but not only is that one incredibly slow, it also
keeps forgetting I paid for the full version.

That post mentioned PiaoHong's NewsGroup Reader & Ken's Usenet Reader
both of which were already in the list but it also mentioned Ken's demo.
    <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ken.android.nntpreader>

so I worked hard and this is the result:
    https://mega.nz/file/iVYSlRKD#kSeQuOLfmAqocp_6MkWWDxoE3MN1S17pwQ2WSRrss4M

this is the latest version released by PiaoHong, 2.02, in which
I made all the changes made in recent years to the previous one
    1.65.
I don't think it's bug-free, try it and let me know.

Unfortunately, although the name of this mod is different from the original,
you can't install them together, you get this warning:
    https://i.postimg.cc/05wPh4hm/Screenshot-2024-01-23-22-38-24-511-com-miui-packageinstaller.jpg
whatever Google means by "services", it complains that it sees it
    same identifier in different applications.

if you update the M11 instead, there are no problems.

And then a quick followup by that same Italian poster.

PiaoHong Newsreader Mod 15 by alfio
    https://mega.nz/file/zRx1zZQa#NwKSILiVa7TF47nCiRyqRkDT_EvovfHltT9KXGmif-8

    what's new:
    - fixed M14 bug that blocked the app by opening a thread with many
    messages
    - added option to enable hidden quoting from the 6 dots
    - application of filters when updating the group list
    - eliminated "Update" item in the main menu

regarding filters, the original app updated the internal database
only when a new message arrived and only the groups in which they arrived
new messages, now by performing an "Update" (the 2 arrows or by pulling down
the list of groups) the filters are applied to all the groups,
so after creating a new filter you need to go to the group list and
    execute "Update" to apply it.
I remind you that the "delete" action in the definition of a filter deletes
the message from the internal database. By removing the filter, the deleted messages

Later in that same thread is an important discussion about ad blocking.
    by alfio
A separate discussion concerns advertising messages.
You could make a yes/no option editable and set to "yes"
    by default.
the user can already choose not to see advertising, just use
    any AD block app.
I use DNS66, I don't see any ads in PiaoHong.

By the way, for all the possible "Private DNS" settings, see this thread.
    Private DNS in Android settings
    <https://www.novabbs.com/computers/article-flat.php?id=44503&group=comp.mobile.android#44503>
That thread contains every known & tested Private DNS for Android.

The thread is longer but this dialog could be important to note.
    Post by fandango:
can I switch from Version:1.65.M10 to this one? (15)

    Post by alfio:
No, they are two separate versions.
But you just need to make a backup of the 10 (with the appropriate
function, present in the server configuration in practice), and
the new installation of the 15 will recover it for you.

It will be installed as a new app and coexists with M10, this is because
from M11 onwards I changed the internal name of the app to avoid
the PlayStore always trying to update it.

And then there was a discussion about re-using an old paid version.
    Post by Henry The Mole
    https://mega.nz/file/zRx1zZQa#NwKSILiVa7TF47nCiRyqRkDT_EvovfHltT9KXGmif-8

Do you happen to have the apk of the paid version of this app lying
around somewhere ? I bought it and have always used it but
now it has been removed from the PlayStore and with the latest clean
flash of my smartphone for yet another modding I find myself taken aback.

The app is called Usenet NewsReader (net.piaohong.NewsReader) and the latest
version should be 2.02 late 2019.

    Post by Taf
If alfio doesn't get you the "original" version that you purchased,
you could download this one (which however is also "modded", like
alfio's - but in a less "intrusive" way):
    https://www.happymod .cloud/usenet-newsreader/net.piaohong.NewsReader/
(it's "paid for free", so someone tampered with it).

In any case, if I were you, I would consider
Alfio's MOD 15 which is based on Piao Hong's 2.02. At least you know
who got their hands on it...

Or wait to see if alfio and/or P/ero have a copy of the
    original 2.02.

Maybe on an old device (which I don't have here with me now) I could
even have it too. But it's a phone I haven't used for years! I'll have
to see if it still turns on (tonight).

Mod 16 adds a simple filter on the Newsgroups header, so you can
filter out posts x-posted to a specified group.

There is a version with different colours.
    <https://it.tlc.cellulari.android.narkive.com/hfxpyFVL/nreader-mod16-quando-un-link-per-il-download>

Here is the translation of that M16 post by Alfio in the Italian ng.

    alfio
    there he is!

    version with new colors:
    https://mega.nz/file/GAwnTAaI#CshrBLtSl2smdcmHiBD0wdj-V409CJyq9nJ7IpQ0ooY
I forgot to tell you that I then used a lighter purple
because it looks better with the dark theme.

    version with original colors:
    https://mega.nz/file/DdQyVBgY#jq7uq7r4e8waidolLyvLgD_G_Rc82_FURYxaak7NUCI

as the only additional feature there is the possibility to set the
crosspost filters, everything else you reported here on the
group still needs to be done.

And here are the two M16 files from that alfio post above.
    version with new colors:
    Name: MC-ModNewsReader 2.02.M16.apk
    Size: 3935119 bytes (3842 KiB)
    SHA256: 010AAF7EFF0ABBE040E66BE0486F6D32936432EC16C8F2FB56717479C76F4CDA

    version with original colors:
    Name: OC-ModNewsReader 2.02.M16.apk
    Size: 3922831 bytes (3830 KiB)
    SHA256: 97B27E062306C9D6FEA9FC6EA49FEA7D920FF7C0CB05AAFBBEB9C96758A68C97

There's a discussion about the mods being "retroactive" whatever that means.
    Post by Timo Kotipelto
I prefer the one with the classic colors but I will also try the one
with the colors (especially if you tell me that the installation in this case
    is retroactive).

From Mod 12 onwards (which is based on PHNR 2.02) it is always retroactive!
It is always installed as an update in both directions (from mod 12
towards the latest and vice versa)

    Then Roxy pointed out:
I want to point out that on the version with basic colors the
marked icons no longer have the white symbol on the gray icon,
now they are all gray and it is barely visible.

    To which alfio responded:
Thanks for the report, I will change the color of that icon.
    here is the fix:
    https://mega.nz/file/nBZUwAaQ#5u3Vv7L2L5aQ7yIQOzD65-bC15FG8YuxctabJmdNq40

The M16 file that the above links to is the following:
    Name: OC-ModNewsReader 2.02.M16.apk
    Size: 3922764 bytes (3830 KiB)
    SHA256: 56F115367EBA6BDC294AD98DE2F90BA070EA2485CED8E9BBBC663E85750AC6C0

    Then Mod 17 came out.

    ModColor:
    https://mega.nz/file/CIhiFKDT#H4FvPyZ_SIWKitPvaUxjKstjNmg

PJhyMqwZxI4VkWVE nothing special new on the color front, while I added 2 new
    settings:
1- "View orphaned messages", the function was already present
in the M16 but not everyone liked it, now you can't use it.
Its use modifies the data present in the internal DB,
a reset of the groups and a new refresh is therefore recommended when
this setting is changed, otherwise you will see inconsistencies between
messages saved before and after the change of the option.

2- "Custom headers", you can define the attributes that
make up the header of a message. They must be written one
per line, separating ID from the text with the sequence ": " (colon
space). There is no control over what you write, the
server you post with will tell you what is wrong during
    sending.

The two related APKs for those two links above are:
    OriginalColor:
    Name: OC-ModNewsReader 2.02.M17.apk
    Size: 3926860 bytes (3834 KiB)
    SHA256: BB05B9FD454AD8D38047484FEA338DE9FDAB056F56B66D39C114162A53883815

    ModColor:
The download attempt resulted in an error of an invalid decryption key.

Nobody seems to have noticed the invalid decryption key, so maybe it's
just me (yet all the other similar links to the same site worked for me).

Moving on in that Mod17 thread, there's a discussion about hidden features.
From alfio: I discovered that PiaoHong had already sketched it.
he inserted it in the server definition, the page where
we enter the server url, port and username contains 2
hidden fields to insert the custom headers.
the code to use the data entered is missing, if you think it could
also be useful at the server definition level, I can try
to move it there, reusing the draft made by PiaoHong.

another thing sketched out and left hidden by PiaoHong is the
ability to mark a message as "favorite".
here too the draft stops at the display of an icon
(star) that changes color when pressed, the code to
store the choice in the DB and carry out searches or filter by
    favorites is missing.

That's the end, where unfortunately, the "modified color" mod17
link has an invalid decryption key, so you can only get teh Mod 17
    original color.

If anyone has the mod17 modified color link, please post in reply.

Ignore everything before M16. This solves the main problem with
the PiaoHong newsreader - screwed-up quoting. Also the
less-obvious design fault that it ignored replies if it didn't
have the replied-to post. It also reports x-posts, which is
    important IMO.

The OC (original colours) version of M16 works adequately - not
perfectly - for me on an Android 13 tablet, and better than the
paid-for (VIP) version which I used for years. The colour version
is preferred by some on the Italian newsgroup - for phones I
    think.

If you prefer the old behaviour whereby replies to missing
replied-to posts are ignored - which can lead to multiple threads
starting Re: and doesn't play well with filtering - then you can
revert that in M17. Also if you want to use odd headers, like
    x-face. I haven't used M17.

I will report on any future changes in the earlier thread I
    referred to in news.software.readers.

Thanks for that belated advice as it wasn't intuitive to me that Mod 17

    x-face. I haven't used M17.

Thanks for that summary that M17 isn't a bugfix of M16 but that it's a
design change that reverts to the old ways (which makes it a different app
in terms of what you said was different above).

Plus M17 adds an X-Face header.
So it's going to be up to user preference which to use, M16 or M17.

I will report on any future changes in the earlier thread I
    referred to in news.software.readers.

For reference for others, so they don't have to search for that thread as I did, especially given newsreader retention sucks on the servers I use, is:

I will further post related issues to _that_ thread, as will you.
Thanks for helping all of us obtain a decent newsreader for Android.
