  • Netsafe Not So Independent After All

From Lawrence D'Oliveiro@21:1/5 to All on Wed Feb 19 21:50:58 2025
    XPost: nz.general

I was surprised to learn a few days ago that Netsafe was taking legal
action against the Human Rights Commission over the latter’s claims
that insufficient action was taken by the social media companies over
threats and abuse against former 🇳🇿 Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern <https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/tech-agencies-lawyer-up-after-claim-they-failed-to-protect-jacinda-ardern-from-violence-misogyny/MQA6EBAMSRA5JAWI3A2MDL35DM/>.
You’d think that different independent groups all looking out for
people’s welfare, both online and in the real world, would be broadly
    on the same page, right?

No, because Netsafe is not exactly an independent group. It gets a lot
of funding from those very social media companies that are often at
the root of the problem <https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/netsafes-tech-ties-spark-calls-for-independent-regulator/Z27EDQ6OBBDG5MN7PVFOJIOCXM/>.
And many members of the public (like myself) don’t realize this.

    Things have become more complicated.

What would you regard as less tabloid trash on this subject, Bill?
