    Please explain this. IIRC smarthost means that all non-local mails
    will be send to this specific host (lookup for A/AAAA record). In which
    way MX records are involved with the smarthost definition?

    Sendmail by default uses MXes first when relaying to the smart host.
    Special trick (smart host name in square brackets) is required to turn
    off MX lookups.

    Ok, so that means if there is an MX record for the hostname of the
    smarthost, sendmail will send the mails to the machine named in the MX
    record instead of the smarthost?

    I've never had such a situation, so it was regardless is I used square
    brackets or not, the behaviour at the end was the same.

    Long time ago when c.m.sendmail had been _very_ active questions
    "How to turn off MX lookups" were quite frequent.
