It's the change of tense - from clear future ("will play") to implied
future ("plays") that feels unnatural to me.
The developers don't do the localization, there are specialist teams for >that. The engineer will write a a placeholder, like VIDEO_PLAY_MSG and a >description for context "This is shown while an ad is playing". That
is sent to translators for all supported languages and locales, and then
the placeholder is replaced dynamically with the right message.
It's more complicated than that, but you get the idea.

Makes sense, and I should have thought that through. Still puzzled as to
why they changed it at all, though. (I get the feeling the ad. proportion/frequency is increasing, but that may not be the case.)

What has happened since 1979, I suspect, is that the spotting of mistakes has become entirely associated with mean-spiritedness, snobbishness and judgementalism. But...can be...funny and interesting.
