    like the G in good, not sure whats official.

    No, there wasn't. But there was Deja News, which was an archive of Usenet newsgroups.
    Google aquired it and made it into Google Groups.
    And comp.graphics.apps.gimp is one of these Usenet Newsgroups, and the corresponding Google group is a gateway to the usenet group.
    But it wouldn't surprise me if many Google Groups users would not even know what Usenet is.

    And Wikipedia also gives that pronunciation of Gimp.

    Usenet (the archive of which Google bought in 2001 and folded into Google Groups) was established in 1980. The oldest archived message (because no one thought to archive anything before then) was May 1981.
