I seem to have a very new version of gimp, and don't get
that tool bAR At the top, only a panel at left, where there
are a lot of things I have no use for - a painting brush, etc
etc. One of the tools I use most is the crop tool. How do I
find that?

I guess what I really would like is to have that top tool
or menu bar back, where I find those tools.

Another question, how can I draw a thin straight line on an
image between two points?

1. Select the paths tool.
2. In the Tool Options panel, make sure that the edit mode is "Design".

The "nib pen" icon I was referring to is the one to the left of the
eyedropper icon in your toolbox. In your screenshot, it's on the 2nd row
from the top of the toolbox; it's the 3rd icon from the left.

I don't use GIMP on Ubuntu. I don't know how to make the menu bar show
if it's not showing. Sorry.
