anyone know where I can find some test images, even if they are in
sRGB? I'm mainly looking for scenes, want to create my own targets,
would need the color space profile too

This might help some, they include some icc profiles. <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/FileChute/PDI_Target_All_F.zip> <https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1295663/FileChute/PDI_Target_WhackedRGB_F.zip>

    However,

as far as targets go, you are going to be better off spending some cash
on a calibrated target. I use an X-Rite Passport Colorchecker. <http://xritephoto.com/colorchecker-passport-photo>

There are others. Just understand that it is not going to be practical
to create your own targets as you have no calibrated reference.

As far as color space profile goes, that is going to depend on your
display (which in all likelihood is sRGB) and your intent regarding the
sort of work you are trying to do and the software you are using.

I'm not quite ready to tackle appearance issues with digital camera
capture, I was thinking of color conversions with octave and
visualation with gimp or gnuplot of standard spaces, I do have a color
scanner on my B&W laser printer
