  • APS from different points.

    Hello Hub,

    I need your kind support to clarify why when applying APS switching time test from different points within network in some points it wasn’t meet the condition of < 50ms (When disconnecting tx and rx not only rx) and in other points it differed
    according to the point of disconnecting.

    P.s: This was DWDM.

    I need some more details.
    Which type of APS are you testing? Linear or Ring?
    If Linear, 1+1 or 1:1 ?
    Is the test signal a bitstream, or packet based?

    All I can say now is that the switching time has to be measured
    from the time a defect (LOS in this case) has been detected until
    the switch has taken place, i.e. connection has been restored.

    The test i need to carry out is OTN ring.

    In the case of a break the traffic is looped back from the working
    path in the reverse direction on the protection path in the node
    just before the break, and again looped back from the protection
    path to the working path at the node just after the break.

    Due to the looping the traffic is interrupted two times, and also
    due to the looping the traffic will travel the full length of the
    ring extra, causing more delay in resynchronising the signal.

    Depending on the total length of the ring the switch delay may be
    greater than 50 ms.

    The protection switch normally takes place in the cross-connect
    of the system. If the cross-connect is on the same card as the
    interface, removing the card will be regarded as node failure
    and protection swich takes place in the adjacent node.

    Note that the protection switch time is not always easy to measure
    becuase the detection time for the defect that causes the switch
    is not included.
    So if the system is slow in detecting the defect the measured
    switch time may be longer, because in general you measure the
    detection time + switching time.
