The answer is not just to throw up our hands and say, "Well, they

times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not

propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic

Largely true.
And while there are always those smart enough to see
what is happening, they are first ignored, then shouted
down, then persecuted, then disappeared.
Nothing new under the sun.
Alas, by the context, I'm assuming you think Trump is
the 'totalitarian' of the hour.
He IS pushy, but I just can't read actual evil in his
personality. He is not disappearing his opponents,
does not have an 'SS' or Stasi, is not pushing
'fantastic' conspiracy theories or a new religion.
Just wants to get the ultra-lefty mess back under
some kind of sane control.
The lefties do not WANT "sane control", their mission
has always been to chip the foundations out from under
western civ so our "betters" can run the world. This
goes back to Lenin, a little further actually. It
is The Plan.
Trump says "No !".
I do wish there was a more polished messenger, but
this is a new age and the old statesmen are gone -
do not play well on TV/Net.
I hope Trump cuts the legs out from under WokieCom,
so it can never stand again. Where we go from THERE,
well, our choice. Not sure there IS a "sane center"
right now. Again, that doesn't play well on TV -
TV wants FLAMES, sells. Ten times worse than Hearst's
tabloids of the late 1800s.
