Chicago area decades ago, and drove with a hatchet on the front seat
when going to work due to the threat of a mob attacking my car at a stop light. Chicago was a hell hole then, and it is worse now!!
After I moved from the area and would return to visit friends and
relatives, I carried a gun in the front of the car, not a hatchet. I questioned if I should do that, so I stopped at a local police station
and asked their advice about the gun. I was told, "Better to be judged
by 12 than be carried by 6."

My daughter and grandson went to Chicago a year or so a ago.
They had a great time. Chicago has so many great things to see
and visit. Same as Washington DC, New York, L.A., ....
There are bad areas, sure. You likely won't see Trump's would-be
