The end of an exemption on tariff duties for low-value packages
coming into the United States is causing multiple international
postal services to pause shipping as they await more clarity on
    the rule.

The exemption, known as the “de minimis" exemption, allows
packages worth less than $800 to come into the U.S. duty free.
A total of 1.36 billion packages were sent in 2024 under this
exemption, for goods worth $64.6 billion, according to data
from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Agency.

It is set to expire Friday. On Saturday, postal services around
Europe announced that they are suspending the shipment of many
packages to the United States amid confusion over new import
    duties.

Postal services in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Italy said they
will stop shipping most merchandise to the U.S. effective
immediately. France and Austria will follow Monday.

    . . .

Looks like you'll have to wait on those nice Danish plates
    and primo German audio equipment.

Also probably CAR parts. Your $199,000 Mercedes won't
    work without those little do-hickeys.

The problem here isn't expense per-se ... but confusion
ABOUT the expenses. Trump likes confusion, it's a major
strategy and oft successful. If opponents don't know
where you're going to zig and zag they cannot prepare
    a counter-strategy against you.

I don't see the EU as an 'enemy' - just 'the competition'.
As such, we ought to work this out as quickly as possible
so everyone knows where they stand.

    Under Trump America has indeed
    become an international pariah.

The rest of the world doesn't
want to travel here, they don't
even want to mail things here.

And this is what you voted for?

I have heard that the reason for this is that the US Postal Service
isn't equipped to collect the customs duty, and so Trump has demanded
that the overseas postal services collect the US Customs Duties for
    him, which they naturally refused.

    Not SURE they can "refuse".

However, at the moment, there's no
    Clear Path.

In the past, when the South African post office still worked (before semi-privatisation) when one had to collect a package on which customs
duty had to be paid, there was also an "administration fee" -- which
sometimes had to be paid even if there was no customs duty. This was
to cover the extra expens the ppost office had to go to to pay the
staff etc for that particular work.

If, however, they are being asked to provide staff to collect duty for
another country (in this case the USA) then that country would need to
pay an administration fee for the extra work in collecting it, or, as
you say, retain a percentage of the tariff.
