ST. LOUIS Two weeks after Gov. Mike Kehoe officially submitted documents requesting a major disaster declaration from the federal government,
President Donald Trump called Kehoe to tell him the request was approved.

"I appreciate President Trump for calling me personally this evening to
notify us that he has approved Missouri's request for a major disaster declaration in response to the May 16 severe storms and tornadoes," Kehoe posted on social media. "Missourians are grateful for the President's leadership."

Lt. Gov. Dave Wasinger was first to break the news of the federal aid on
social media. Wasinger announced the president had approved $71 million in disaster relief funding, which pales in comparison to the damage estimates
of $1.6 billion. Sen. Eric Schmitt tweeted the same figure later on Monday night.

According to a White House official, the $71 million includes $60.5
million in direct individual aid to impacted people and local government agencies. The other $10.5 million comes from an outstanding request after storms hit Missouri in April.

However, that dollar amount is merely an estimate, the Trump
administration official said, and usually swells to a larger total once
people start to submit direct applications. That process could begin
    within 48 hours.

Mayor Cara Spencer celebrated the announcement online, saying, "Help is on
    the way!"

Earlier on Monday afternoon, Spencer called St. Louis the "poster child"
in the national debate over whether FEMA should continue to support local governments rebuild in the wake of natural disaster.

Spencer spoke with the media on Monday night and said in part, "I do feel
    very, very great."

"I've said it 100 times, we can't do this alone, no city can nor should
any city be forced to go at this alone," Spencer said.

In addition to the $71 million in federal funding, the Presidential major disaster declaration allows the Small Business Administration to start
writing low-interest, long-term loans to help people and businesses access capital to begin rebuilding quickly.

"We know that there are several waves here," Spencer said. "We have
unlocked essentially the first step of individual assistance following
that there will be a public assistance component."

The executive action also triggers boots-on-the-ground assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers to begin treating and removing asbestos-laded debris from the area.

"I feel very confident that we have some federal assistance coming our
    way," Spencer said.
