Which is _exactly_ what the friend is doing. The steps she seems to
have undertaken are:

(1) Backup important data from 16.04
(2) Boot off 20.04 USB Stick
(3) Attempt install (this dies partway through)

Given the install is dying partway though, I'd hazard there's a bad
drive in the mix (or the creation of the install media went south).

Serge - has your friend tried running the media self-test off the USB Bootloader and/or memtest to check the RAM? I think those are the last options (or "hidden" behind the "Advanced Startup" option); but it's
been a while since I've booted off install media.

Well, "okay enough" to boot doesn't necessarily mean "Okay enough" to
install. Depends where the media is damaged, the self-test is a nice
way to confirm that the media is in fact fine.

But when installing on a machine with an existing distro did she specify
to install UB20.3 on the whole HD ? If not there might not be enough HD
space to install UB 20.3 alongside the existing distro .

That would definitely be problematic too :)

Personally I would first erase the HD to its "unallocated" state with
Gparted before installing UB20.3

Spun a VM up to test the 20.04 installer.

At first there's kind of a weird purple splash screen with what looks
like a little person(?) at the bottom. Hit <esc> on this screen.

It'll drop you to an ncurses window asking for language selection (pick whatever is most convenient -- I chose English). After you select the
language you're on a (customized) grub screen, with six (6) options

[] Try Ubuntu without installing
[] Try Ubuntu without installing (safe graphics)
[] Install Ubuntu
[] Install Ubuntu (safe graphics)
[] Test Memory
[] Boot from first hard disk

Unfortunately, it seems that my memory of this menu is wrong, and there
is no longer a "Media Self Test" style option -- just the "Test Memory"
(which is memtest86+ ... and not what I was looking for)

Though rebooting the VM and waiting on the thing to just boot, I noticed
that it started doing a media test before it got to the "Okay, what do
you want to do" screen.

3) There is a log after (failed) install, on the USB key. It mentions something related to Nvidia, but I don't understand it either... :-(

My friend has indeed made a backup of her home directory, and then a
bootable USB key with Ubuntu 20.04. Then after boot, there are two options:

1) either try Ubuntu without installing it. This does work, everything
is ok, internet and wifi.

2) or install Ubuntu. This seems to start correctly, but at some point,
the process stops,
