• Tin Konsolenreader

From Wolfgang Bauer@21:1/5 to All on Tue Oct 24 10:46:01 2023
    Hello.

I have Kubuntu 23.10 installed and am using Tin as a console reader.
Is it possible to start tin with your own profile via the desktop starter?

    With kind regards

    You can use

    xterm -e tin
in a desktop starter as the command.

Nothing happens like this, Tin doesn't start like this.
    Thanks.
    With kind regards

Does it work if you start it through the terminal with xterm -e?

I installed tin in a live LM Cinnamon; I've never used it.

The info about 'profile' is about the profile of the console/terminal
per se. Kub's default is konsole.

Tin's 'configuration' is largely in its directory in your home dir.

My news provider NIN has instructions for 'configuring' for its use w/
that server which you may find helpful even tho' that isn't your NSP,
and the instructions are for tin 1.9 whereas my current is 2.6.2

    Program configuration for tin 1.9

Make the following adjustments to use our news server:

    I liked Alpine ok 'tho'.

It has a curses interface and help/configuration are 'built-in'. The
2.26 v. is in the Ub repo/s which is current. It calls itself a mail
agent, but I've only used it for news.

Other help; the tin site has two useful man sections 1 & 5.
    http://tin.org/
Section 1 manpage of the latest stable version

Section 5 manpage of the latest stable version

1 has 'Usage' and 5 has config files.

Personally, I find all of that 'confusing'. The last time I twiddled w/
a console news agent it was slrn, but that process didn't suit me.
