• OT: e-ticket barcode problem

From Graham J@21:1/5 to All on Mon Jul 21 18:22:46 2025
I ordered some tickets and received an email on my PC showing a barcode
    and all the purchase details.

I received the same email on my quite old Android phone, which looks essentially the same, except that the area where the barcode should be
has a tiny square icon with some green colour followed by some text
    which begins: "MAR25:0d0afa63 …" {my quotes]

Clearly I would like to show my phone at the venue rather than print a
    piece of paper.

All other emails containing images display correctly on my phone, so
this must be a problem relating to the barcode.

    Any ideas?

If it helps the supplier is the Edinburgh Fringe, and while very helpful
they haven't been able to resolve this.

What application are you using to display the email in the phone? I'd
guess it is the Google Mail one. You could try to install K9 and load
    the email there.

But as this is a one time occurrence, I would export or print the email
to PDF in the computer, and transfer that to the phone. Assuming you
    have a PDF viewer.

Or, in the computer upload that PDF to Google Drive. Then open the same
PDF in Drive, which I believe can display PDFs from inside the Drive.

    Or, print to paper...

Save the emails as pdfs and transfer to your phone?

Exactly! That's what I (have to) do when I get e-mails which do not
display properly in the e-mail program(s) on my phone. In my experience, Android phones - and hence their 'mailers' - are quite limited in which
kind of files they can display/handle.

IIRC, one of the first examples was a .tif (Tag Image File Format [1]) picture file which Windows handles just fine, but had no renderer on
the Android version I had at the time [2].

[1] A TIFF file can be quite efficient for scans of hand-written text.
For example a scan of two A5 pages of text is only about 80 KB.

[2] Just checked again on my new (Samsung Galaxy A56) phone with Android
15 and that (the (Google) 'Photos' app) still can't handle a TIFF file.

The email app is the default for the Sony Xperia X, shown as copyright

For the moment I will print it ...

So you just watch the clock on the wall or that one on the microwave
    oven, right?

I have a clock on the wall. It's not in this room,
and it doesn't have a battery in it. The time is correct
twice a day :-) That's the clock I use to set the
    time on the microwave.

The computer has accurate time. There, I just synced it.

Comparing that image with the time my Thunderbird puts on your post, I
see you're about five hours behind me, so regardless of whether either
of us is on summer time, I presume you're _not_ in line of sight with
    the Greenwich time ball!>

Your filename reminded me that I was amused to see - I think it was one
of the YouTube clips about it - that they actually _check_ the Great
Clock in the Palace of Westminster (what most people call Big Ben; the mechanism is famously adjusted by adding or removing old pennies to the pendulum) by ringing up the speaking clock.>
