Every time I open Task Scheduler, I get three error messages. One
is:

longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."
The other two are similar but with different task IDs. This
probably came about when I was forced to do a repair install a
few weeks ago after a power failure, and I also created a new
profile and deleted the old one. So, this task might be a remnent
of the old setup.
I cannot find any reference to these ID numbers in Task
Scheduler, though I'm just eyeballing it - there are tons of
tasks and Task Scheduler has no search function (grrr.) I suppose
they could be listed with a more "friendly" name.
I do find that ID referenced twice in Regedit in the
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tasks\ key. Can I safely
delete the tasks there?
Does your backup software allow you to "mount" saved images with a
name, e.g., "f" or "x", in your current system? If so look in the
backups you do have for those ids and any other helpful evidence
in the same relative places you are looking now. The only drawback
to this approach is that specialized visualization tools such as
provide through ctr-shift-esc will not be available.
Not sure how helpful that would be. In any case, I now believe that the
error message is misleading. Tasks with those ID names can be found in
the C:\Windows\System32\Tasks folders. Examining them, it looks like
the real problem my be the user/account listed there is not one that
currently exists on this computer. If I move them out of that folder, I
still get the error messages. If I try to correct the account name
(they are editable XML files) and import them back in, I still get the
error. It appears those tasks are cached somewhere, maybe in the
Registry. Haven't decided what, if anything, to do next.
