I have two machines in my office and have been using a kvm switch for
years with no problem. I recently replaced one of the machines and
confirmed the KVM was working ok.

The next day however the KVM did not activate on the previously existing machine.

I tried a different KVM switch and the same thing happened.It worked
initially but after both machines were switched off and back on...it
would not switch over.


In all instances I could switch back OK to the other machine.

Kind of a PITA to have two KB and two Mice on my desk

BIOS option that allows that when a machine is powered off. Or use an
external power supply?

I would prefer a product that has a separate barrel
input connector for the DC power the product needs.
The structure above is Wired-OR input power.

There is actually a small problem with KVMs, in that
the safety-ground on the two computers, could be
at different potentials, and then you'd have to
figure out what to do about the grounding issues.
I've never had a problem at home here with this,
but did have problems at work (very large building).

One of my KVM's has an external power port so I am going to keep it
powered and see if that works.

Nope that did not work. Might be due to using ps/2 to USB adaptors. I
can get by with two mice so I might see if I can find a USB switch just
for the KB

Got a USB switch for KB only and things seem to be a bit smoother now.

Doing a ps-2 switch entails "holding" the signal...for if the mouse or
KB are unplugged, they may not be inserted. It seems my KVM's were not
holding properly. With the USB switch, it seems it's simply unpluging
and re-plugging.
