    GOCR, maybe?

    FreeOCR
    http://www.paperfile.net/
Doesn't recognize handwriting. Alignment is important.
Scans from most TWAIN scanners (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWAIN).
    System requirements: see http://www.paperfile.net/download.html.

    SimpleOCR
    https://www.simpleocr.com/
30-day of advanced function, basic viewing and OCR thereafter.
"SimpleOCR works on any version of windows, from Windows 95-10 and
beyond! Your scanner need only a TWAIN driver, the driver that comes
with a majority of all scanners sold."

    Boxoft Free OCR
    http://www.boxoft.com/free-ocr/
    "For Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/7"

What scan software do you use now with your scanner under Windows XP? I
use the scan software that was included with my scanner. Yours didn't
come with software (driver and scan program)? Go to the scanner maker's
web site, and get their own TWAIN driver and scan software for whatever
    scanner you have (unidentified here).

Since free solution also suits my need, I did not try it.

I don't have a scanner; I use OCR to extract text from pictures and
    photos.
