My laptop is XP-era. (It's not running Windows right now, but still.)

Also, I'm posting this from an XP VM running on a Macbook.

I suppose it doesn't hurt to keep the channel open even if
there is nothing to ask or talk about, and hope that others are
at least doing the same. Otherwise, a long span of no messages
could encourage an unsubscribe, and the group can truly die
    off.

I did get a recent spam in here, "Blank ATM cards". Very
    annoying.

wrt XP, I had a recent good journey upgrading my T60 from a
250GB hdd to a 1TB ssd. At the time, the concern about lack of
TRIM and reducing unnecessary writes to the ssd didn't really
come to mind. But disabling the page writes system and
ununessary updates to "last accessed" for the files goes a long
    way.

I think "alt.comp.os.windows-xp" is the most proper hierarchy name among

I have some groups (hamster.*) not having any posts for years, but I
still subscribe them because I am using hamster gateway. Newsgroups
don't need checking from time to time as web forums. Putting them in the subscription list doesn't cost anything.

I did get a recent spam in here, "Blank ATM cards". Very

I created a subject filter in TB to delete them. Handy now, but I worry
about more sophisticated, pattern-less spam, though it seems not likely
    in today's Usenet.

My X61 is similar to T60. I upgraded memory to 4G, 3G for system and the
other 1G that XP cannot use for ramdisk. HDD sata mode is quick enough
for me now, maybe I will consider SSD later. And I use ThrottleStop to

Ramdisk finds its revival after RAM gets cheaper, and so gets bigger than XP can handle. I use Gavotte RAMDisk downloaded from:
    http://reboot.pro/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=6943
It can use memory beyond 4GB through PAE.
Your could take a look at readme file in the 7z package. In short, install it as a device driver though rramdisk.inf; Import ram4g.reg to use PAE; ramdisk.exe is a GUI for simple setting. Reboot to take effect.
Then you can format the new ramdisk, set the pagefile to it (media type should be "fixed").
    And better set
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
    "DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001
To prevent the driver be swapped to the page file.

I doubt will lose lot by blocking Google groups. Most people are

Nice that usenet is still alive and can get answers or replies here

Good point. When something gets posted, it will show up.

I did get a recent spam in here, "Blank ATM cards". Very
    annoying.

I created a subject filter in TB to delete them. Handy now,
but I worry about more sophisticated, pattern-less spam,
though it seems not likely in today's Usenet.

But building the filters could be a full time job. The spammer
just has to change one letter, or come in under a new name. It
can be a constant battle. It would seem easier to block
messages from nntp servers that don't authenticate users, and/
or just block the whole groups.google source.
I wonder can this be done on any newsgroup client? I am using Forte
Agent currently and that could reduce spam by lot since Usenet server
I use requires authentication and got zero spam policies.

If you mean block articles from Google, as long as Forte Agent could
filter articles with headers, you have choices:
    "User-Agent:" header is "G2/1.0"
"Path:" header ends with "google-groups.googlegroups.com!not-for-mail" >"Injection-Info:" header contains "google-groups.googlegroups.com"
Seems that forte supports header based filtering so I could try that.
I doubt will lose lot by blocking Google groups. Most people are
likely using Eternal-September or other private servers to access
usenet anyway. I used to use my ISP usenet server until it was ditched
in 2021 (they had it still up until that but did not advertise it
    existance).

Nice that usenet is still alive and can get answers or replies here
still. It is more relaxed and free form for communication than message boards.

    Keep it alive!

wrt XP, I had a recent good journey upgrading my T60 from a
    250GB hdd to a 1TB ssd. ...

My X61 is similar to T60. I upgraded memory to 4G, 3G for
system and the other 1G that XP cannot use for ramdisk. HDD
sata mode is quick enough for me now, maybe I will consider
SSD later. And I use ThrottleStop to boost CPU sometimes.

What did you use to create/configure the ramdisk? I thought
ramdisk tools were from the days of 286s and 386s.

Newer tools exist since ramdisk is still useful. I use Gavotte RAMDisk >1.0.4096.5, Google it and you'll find the first link to MSFN where I got
    it from.

I still have a Ramdisk drive 'B:' for TEMP files.
Seems that I set it up using QSoft ramdrive from 2005 - the setup page
    seems to use Cyrillic.

I am Forte Agent newsreader fan as well for that reason. I have set up
plenty of filters for cleaning up most of generic SPAM. Plus it is so
clean and minimal. I use old copy I bought long ago and it still does

I'm still using the 1.93 version of Agent. Those newer versions with
all their extra nonsense folders and gimmicks I didn't need. I'm not
an obsessive who has to have a formal, detailed record of every post I
ever made, every person I ever posted to nor whatever other gimmicks
those newer versions had that I've forgotten about. Matter of fact, I
toyed with one new version for about 10' minutes before dumping it and
    going back to 1.93.

The reason of *simplicity* is why I still use XP. If you peruse any of
the Win 10 or 11 groups you can see what a mess Redmond made of what
    was a simple OS.

But then, What does a simple minded non- tech know about all this
software "progress" - except that many times that "progress" has
    ruined some really good software.

I am using 1.91 which is slightly older and it works great.

The reason of *simplicity* is why I still use XP. If you peruse any of
the Win 10 or 11 groups you can see what a mess Redmond made of what
    was a simple OS.
I am still using 98 and XP for that reason. There has only been
downgrades ever since. XP brought together Windows 9x and NT users
under single ecosystem and it had choices, simple UI for beginners
then ability do lot advanced setting from older windows, you could
make it act like Windows 95 if you wanted without third party
software. On Windows 10 good luck even with third party software get
that classic look or get power user dialogs back

But then, What does a simple minded non- tech know about all this
software "progress" - except that many times that "progress" has
    ruined some really good software.
Problem is that most people are simple minded compared to you. You are
much more open minded by not falling for "only teh latest and
greatest" mindset that people are having. Their use of computers is
only browse pictures of cats and watch video clip, no serious word
processing or anything else that computers were meant to use. They
think it is just snap of fingers to ugprade.

Let me give example from back when I used to work more with industrial equipment: There was line used for analyze structural damage on any
returned products factory recieved. That was done using Windows 2000
and application was running on Server 2003 using custom databases.
Server was becoming old and had to be virtualised. I though all I need
to do is convert it to VHD and move into Hyper-V server.

Last time I had used Hyper-V was back in ws2008 where there was quest
addon cd. However this was removed on Server 2016 making installing
legacy hw harder. I started searching for where obtain addons and
found too many blogposts where people kept saying same "just upgrade application to newer version". Problem was that could not be made work
under newer Windows server, it had been tried and cost of renewing it
would have meant also replacing all analysis devices, computers and
client programs and that would have been millions worth of cost. Thing
is unlike consumer device most of industrial devices can be fixed even
if they are over 20 years old.

Eventually I did manage find ISO I needed and was able succesfully
transfer server into Hyper-V and as far as I know it is still in use.

It would be good for those "experts" who keep spouting upgrade all the
time work even one day on industrial equipment to get cured from shiny
    new stuff syndrome.
